Did you know that chickens need encouragement to lay eggs?

After 8 years of chicken husbandry, I have learned that the act of egg laying is no simple thing. It can be quiet and discreet. But it is often raucous, upsetting, and a fraught with disruption daily event. The protests one hen will make as she is being disturbed by another in the act of laying can sound like something terrible is happening. And it can last for hours. I have come to understand that what sounds like a bird being murdered, is just the sound of a particular hen laying a particular egg.

Can you imagine having to push one of these out…every day?
