Welcome to The Ruins Podcast. I’m Rachel Sager and for those new to the story, I am the owner and creator of The Ruins Project, an evergreen mosaic installation in the woods of Appalachia. A former coal mine operation that has come back to life in stone and glass and ceramic in order to tell the story of the people who come from coal. To date, more than 250 contemporary mosaic artists from around the world, from a narrow Edinburgh alleyway to the sandy beaches of Greece, Ruins artists bring their skills and stories to the tiny patch town of Whitsett in Fayette County Pennsylvania.
These special people who sit down with me here make their marks on the no longer abandoned walls, of a no longer forgotten coal mine.
Helen Miles is one of my favorite writers on mosaic.
We talk about alchemy, graffiti, the magic of being in the middle of a project, mosaics outlier status, and her brand-new book.
Get yourself settled into your chosen spot and enjoy the listen.
