The Ruins Podcast #13 with Kelley Knickerbocker

1

Hold onto your hammers! This one is all about process; the creative process.

Welcome to The Ruins Podcast. I’m Rachel Sager and for those new to the story, I am the owner and creator of The Ruins Project, an evergreen mosaic installation in the woods of Appalachia. A former coal mine operation that has come back to life in stone and glass and ceramic in order to tell the story of the people who come from coal. To date, more than 250 contemporary mosaic artists from around the world, from the streets of Seattle to the green rolling hills of Ireland, Ruins lovers bring their skills and stories to the tiny patch town of Whitsett in Fayette County Pennsylvania.

These special people who sit down with me here make their marks on the no longer abandoned walls, of a no longer forgotten coal mine.

Kelley Knickebocker is one of those contemporary artists working in mosaic who came at the medium through the back door. She’s a self-taught scrapper, a lot like myself, she has been fighting and digging and hammering her way into mastery by doing the work. She’s hell bent on taking the next step. While never forgetting to keep her eye on what came before.

Her teaching experiences, both online and in person have become important libraries for those who love mosaic and want to learn its secrets.
